We Are Total Heifers

Or rather, we’d like to buy a heifer.

Here’s the dilly. This year, I’m participating in the Blogathon. What’s a Blogathon?

Remember when you were in school and you would bowl for charity? And for every pin you knocked down you got, say, ten cents? Or run for a dollar a mile? During the Blogathon, people update their websites every 30 minutes for 24 hours straight. For this, they collect sponsorships. Pledges can be a flat donation, or a certain amount for every hour the blogger manages to stay awake.

So that’s a Blogathon. I’ve been doing this wacky event since the beginning, and this year, like the past several years, I’m volunteering. But you don’t care about that. You’re interested in this heifer business.

This year, C and I are blogging for Heifer International, a totally awesome organization. In the words of Susan Sarandon (via the organization’s press kit):

With the help of folks like you and me, Heifer International tackles the problem of hunger one family at a time with gifts of renewable resources - farm animals that are ongoing sources of food and income.

How awesome is that? So with this being the Year Of The Fat for me - fat studies, fat rights, fat lib, fat in pop culture - I am harkening back to the days of old, when I was a little kid and the other little kids used to call me a heifer. I know I’m not the only fattie who got called a heifer, so I’m, uh, reclaiming the word. This year, heifer is an awesome thing, because we’re going to raise enough money to buy a goddamned heifer for someone for whom it would be a really, really good thing.

I also suspect that organizations like Heifer, that help people survive by using animal products, piss the hell out of PETA. And as we all know, PETA is pretty fucking fat-phobic. So yeah. Reclaiming the Heifer. Both fatties and non-fatties and inbetweenies alike are welcome to join the cause.

How to support my quest for the Heifer? Get thyself an account at Blogathon, and then sponsor Seeworthy, for as much or as little as you can spare. And remember, it’s not a super-time-sensitive thing, so if you’re expecting a student loan disbursement in the fall… what better way to spend it than on books living costs food supporting my ‘thonning efforts?

And as an incentive, for the first time ever, I’ll be matching donations… up to $125 (hey, I’m a grad student, I do need some books). So donate. Because heifers are fucking awesome.
