Not burnt to a crisp (yet)!
I’ve seen a few concerned blog posts and gotten a whole lot of phone calls and emails asking whether I’m on fire/my house is on fire/my cat is on fire. No worries! None of us have, as of yet, caught fire.
Which is not to say, of course, that it’s not an insanely fucking scary situation. More than 500 thousand people have been evacuated so far, including some of my colleagues and several of my students. Campus is closed, at least for the week, as is C’s work (more or less).
So, for those who would like to know, here is our (approximate) location (circled in red), relative to the evacuation area (yellow) and the actual fires (red). You’ll see that we’re at least *five* miles from the evacuation points, and a good deal more from the fires. Completely safe!
No worries, for now.

The criticisms of my students would serve as a good warning to visitors of Seeworthy: she talks too fast, she's too hard on us, she assigns too much work, and you have to be a dyke to get a good grade.
In other words, I'm a big, fat, queer, feminist meanie, and I am totally out to get you. Graaagh!
Glad to hear it, but I’ll be helping send down money/adventure loving lunatics in helicopters, um, I mean “fire fighters”/good wishes anyway. Stay safe!!!
okay, but just in case, i’m e-mailing you my phone number. i know we’re kinda far away, but you ALWAYS have a home in norcal (where blazing is for medicinal purposes ONLY, yo) if you need it for any reason! i’m so worried, it’s all we can talk about at work! (one of my coworkers is from san diego and updates us periodically on which of her childhood landmarks are being evacuated/closed)
