Affirmative Action, Gay Rights on C-SPAN
Was I the only one watching C-SPAN right now when a white woman, probably in her early twenties, proposed a resolution that the Democratic party either change Affirmative Action to be only about class/economic wealth, or abandon it entirely? Because as a white person, it’s way harder for her to get a Fulbright because they want more “racial” people (did she actually say “racial” people or am I remembering it incorrectly?)? That she’s never been racist to anyone, and because times are so different we don’t need to consider race when implementing Affirmative Action.
What?
And then, a few minutes later in a discussion about a resolution supporting same-sex civil marriage, one man compared a state’s right to regulate same-sex marriage to a state’s right to forbid - I kid you not - marriage between a brother and a sister.
Ah, Iowa.

The criticisms of my students would serve as a good warning to visitors of Seeworthy: she talks too fast, she's too hard on us, she assigns too much work, and you have to be a dyke to get a good grade.
In other words, I'm a big, fat, queer, feminist meanie, and I am totally out to get you. Graaagh!
If you think that’s a hoot, you should watch C-SPAN’s morning program. All kinds of crazy people call in!
These were Dems spewing this nonsense? Must be the Zell Miller wing of the party.
I can only imagine, Sarah.
Tari, yup, it was the Democratic caucus… not that that makes much of a difference, there are ignorant, racist, heterosexist people from all political walks of life. It was good to see other folks countering their idiocy, but I’m still just a little amazed. Really? Did you just say that on national television?
It boggles the mind.
Don’t forget, if she hadn’t learned about slavery in school, she never would have known about racial discrimination, because she’s never seen someone being discriminated against. nope, nu-uh, doesn’t happen.
C’mon. Seriously?
Wow, that girl made me mad.

I know that’s true, and I know there are kazillions of people in red and blue states who wear privelege like blinders. For some reason, though, I’m always surprised when it’s displayed so blatantly. Possibly my own pollyanna-or-privelege-colored glasses, I guess.
