Not necessarily the highest form of flattery

As has been posted at BABble and Big Fat Blog, everybody and their mama got a post (or several) ripped off, modified crapfully and re-posted at one “BIGBOYMARK DOT COM” (no link = no traffic for the offender). While I guess I’m, uh, flattered that somebody thought my post about weight watchers back in December was neat, I’m (more than) a little perturbed to see it copied, more or less in its entirety, at some crappy second-rate knock-off fat lib blog. No word yet on whether or not the guy had any original content or if everything he had was stolen, or whether or not he’ll… y’know… apologize.

Also, in addition to just being a plagiarizing jerk (language temporarily censored in case my students/admissions committees are watching - Hi! I’m awesome, admit me!), he’s also a misogynist jerk; if you check the link, he’s changed most (all?) female names to men, so Meiran has become “George”, darkdaughta becomes “Kingsized” (wtf?), and my own comments are renamed to either “Dee” or “BIGBOYMARK!!!11!!one!!1″

Or something like that.

Anyhow, I’ve heard once your work is plagiarized that means you’ve made it. In my case, I think it just means that I’m unlucky and the internet is full of idiots.

    George? The hell?

*shakes head* I can’t even fathom why somebody would do this. But I’m not that surprised.

Yeah, he grabbed one of my posts too. His site is down, and I complained to his webhost, we’ll see what they do about it. I don’t think he thought he would get caught, or maybe he didn’t care, but it’s not nice to rip off the NYT or the BBC or magazines. They all have legal departments and can afford to sue if they so decide. I feel like I’m in good company, since he ripped off bloggers that I admire a lot and he evidently thought I was good enough to rip off too, but a compliment from a thief isn’t much of a compliment, after all.

On one hand, don’t want to give him traffic.

On the other hand, want to list his name and link his site every single time this issue gets mentioned, because i want ANYONE looking for him as a “website designer” (because his other site was offering website design services) to KNOW damn well that he has stolen before, and will likely steal again if he thinks he can get away with it.

Good point, Lindsay - I’ll edit this shortly to include his contact info. I did a Google search of his site and was able to save quite a few pages from the cache, including his contact page (where he lists various AIM/Y!M/Skype contact methods). Smart one, there.
