Sperm from female eggs/bone marrow

Alternate title for this entry: When it rains it pours, or: holy excessive posting, batman!

Colleen sent me this article about how sperm cells have been created from female embryos. They say they’ll soon be able to do it - if they get permission - from bone marrow as well, opening up the door for female same-sex couples to get preggo without male sperm at all. I’ve been surprised not to hear a lot about it on the feminist blogs I read, though I’ve heard a bit about radio-controlled sperm (which is a whole other post that will not happen at Seeworthy, because two posts on sperm is two posts too many).

Thoughts?

Oh my goodness. We’ve just eliminated the need for an entire half of the species. O_O That’s insane! And scary. Very scary.

Nah, Jen - the ability to do something very high-tech and expensive doesn’t eliminate the need for half of anyone. (Though if it did, that would be scary.) The world is still going to keep revolving and working pretty much the same as it has, same as it did when cloning became possible, and life support - and any Frankenstein type interventions that have come down the pike. When spontaneous parthenogenesis becomes the norm, then we’ll see where it goes :D

I’m not gonna debate with anyone who can casually toss around terms like “spontaneous parthogenesis”.

But my GUT reaction was “Oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy.

    Ooooooooooh boy.”

(’Cause the price of iPods, DVD players, and egg cryogenesis also fell, once upon a time.)
