About

What’s this all about?
Seeworthy.org is my blog, started in 2004. She’s hosted at Dreamhost, the most reliable and feature-rich hosting service I’ve had in my six or seven years of being online. They’re good people.

Where did the name “seeworthy” come from? Contrary to popular belief, it’s not exactly nautically inspired or because I think the site is particularly soft on the eyes. The name comes from one of my favorite movies, Waking Life. A boat car gives the main character a ride, and the driver/sailor explains that

She’s what we call seeworthy, s-e-e, see with your eyes. I feel like my transport should be an extension of my personality. Voila.

And who are you?
I’m Sheana. I live with my parter Colleen, I’m an Arizona native, a Smith College alum, a grad student and teaching associate in San Diego.

I moved to San Diego just under a year ago, and I’m pretty sure I won’t be adjusted to life in California before I leave. Did you know, for example, that you don’t get a new license if your address changes? YOU JUST WRITE IT ON THE BACK OF YOUR CURRENT ONE. Just like that. Crazy! I love all the things you’re expected to love about this area - the gorgeous, sunny days, the gorgeous, sunny beaches, public transportation - but I just can’t help missing the fall colors of New England, where I spent my last four years. After I’m done with all this academic wandering, I hope to end up back in the Pioneer Valley, or somewhere in New England at the very least. It’s nice there. Plus, more than two seasons. That’s always a bonus.

At Smith I studied Russian Literature. I’d like to say I’m fluent in Russian, but the truth is that I’m barely proficient. In our department, we focused a lot more on candy and story-telling in English than on language, but I’m okay with that, because I’m proficient in Spanish, which I like better anyway. I can also say “you smell like a dirty penis” and “my little cabbage” in French. It’s good to have twisted friends in the humanities.

I was once in the New York Times Style section for something that had nothing to do with style. I love fat politics, feminist pornography, and being schooled when I do or say something messed up. I like cheese, and probably you, too.
